As a general rule, I do not believe in torture. I worry about these things - How do you know the person you are torturing really has information? How reliable can the information be as surely someone will say anything to stop being tortured? What of the person doing the torturing - how do they live with themselves? On the other hand, what is defined as torture and is it ever necessary? I really do not have the answers to these questions. I would venture to say that most people do not. However, not to justify torture, but I wonder how far any one of us would go with “torture” in certain circumstances. For example, if someone kidnapped your child and you had the person, without a doubt, who had taken your child, would you torture that person to find our where your child was? I am pretty sure most of us would say a resounding yes to that question.
So the question remains - to torture or not to torture? And what constitutes torture? If you can justify it for one reason, why not for another? Apparently, some of these people who were tortured, would have found it to be torture to spend a day having to talk with a woman without a veil on her face or a scarf on her head. I mean seriously, if it saved millions of lives does that make it okay? Personally, I think women who live under Islamic law are being tortured every day just having to live that way. One man’s torture is another man’s harsh treatment.
I guess what bothers me the most is that those screaming about torture now would not be screaming if someone they approved of did the “torture.” They know this to be true. In their heart of hearts, they know this to be true. This is what really irks me. That everyone cannot honestly deal with any issue without bringing politics into it. This tit for tat, this constant fighting and arguing with each other based on political parties is maddening!! Either have a real discussion on the subject or shut up!
