Sonia Sotomayor

While it seems a purely politically motivated move on Obama’s part to nominate Judge Sotomayor for the Supreme Court Justice, it is a shame. Judge Sotomayor has, like many Americans, beaten the odds, worked hard to get somewhere, the very thing the Democratic party is trying to dissolve. While she deserves the praise for her hard work, being used as a pawn in a political game is where the shame comes in, not for her, but for Obama and those who choose to use people for their own gain and agenda. I am hoping she will serve honorably, and I think she will. I am hoping she will believe in the words in the oath she takes for the office, and I think she will. I applaud her hard work, her mother’s hard work, all that got her to her current position. There are so many fights taking place on the planet these days, the fight for the environment, the fight for human rights, the fight against poverty, the fight against AIDS, the fight against abortion, the fight for abortion, the list is endless! If there was a day that people just woke up in the morning, went about their day, went to bed at night with nothing to worry about, those days are long gone.

The fact is that everywhere we turn, there are battles being waged, lies being told, abuses abound. The fight between good and evil is being fought more fiercely than ever before. It is tiring. It is confusing. It is so stressful. It is necessary though, unfortunately, it will be a long time until good wins out. But good will win out, I believe that. The nomination of Judge Sotomayor should be hardly a footnote in the fray. The right should not worry as the justice she is replacing is liberal as they come. The left should not pat themselves on the back as the main reasons she was chosen was for her race and gender, thus not advancing us as a people at all. But, the right will worry, the left will pat, and you and I, well, we will continue the fight.

There will come a day when people really will get promoted based solely on their merits. There will come a day when killing innocent babies will no longer take place. There will come a day when greed, power, corruption, abuse, deceit will all be but a bad memory. I hope to live to see that day come, but I doubt I will. I will not give up the fight though. We are not super heroes, but we all have a voice, and we all have power to make change. We should never give up that power!
