Double Standard

I want to start out by saying that it is extremely regretful that some people on the right have been attacking Nancy Pelosi on a gender basis, rather than on a fact basis. It is true, it seems as if you either love this person or hate this person, but even though someone makes your blood boil, it is not appropriate to identify her with “P Galore” from the Bond shows. Not only are the Bond movies sexist in themselves, but this shows one of the ongoing problems between men and women. There is a certain amount of respect lacking towards members of the opposite sex. In fact, when the push for everyone to stop using the “N” word rippled through the country, as it should have, there was no push for everyone to stop using the “B” word when referring to women.

I contend that with all the problems in this country with racial bias, etc., that the bias towards women knows no bounds as far as race is concerned, and that women all over the world are still fair game when it comes to mistreatment, disrespect, and out and out abuse.

All this being said, my problem today is with the double standard amongst women themselves. Women tend to be their own worst enemies. Instead of being supportive of each other, they can be the most vicious of attackers. We have this being said about the attacks on Nancy Pelosi - Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, believes that those who attack female leaders on gender grounds do so out of weakness. “In a way, it shows the desperation of the opposition,” she says. “If all else fails, you do something on their looks, or you remind them of sex.” I ask, “Where were statements like these when the attacks were on Sarah Palin.” And that these attacks continue is an even larger question women’s organizations should be asking themselves. If they are truly offended by slamming a woman because she is a woman, then they would stand up for all women in this manner, and we all know they do not.

It is obvious to me that when you lack a certain amoun of intelligence, you call petty names in an attempt to demean people. It does not help when prominent women add to the fray. Watch the View on any given day and you will hear plenty of comments that are inappropriate coming from women who think that are so “with it.”

In the end, it is hard for women to demand respect and receive it when they themselves are guilty of the very things they are accusing men of doing. We definitely need to become more dignified as a people.
